Gaining Respect

Gaining Respect

When You Respect Yourself and Others, Others Will Respect You.

When you first meet people, they will normally grant you a certain level of 'starting respect'. This is normally associated with how they met you and how that first interaction went. Regardless, to be truly respected, you need to earn it.

Honesty

Honesty is one of the best ways to grow respect. It encourages trust and makes people want to ask your input on things.

Do be aware of the biggest pitfall of being blunt. If you're telling people what they're doing wrong when it's not helpful, or in a way that is hurtful, you're not being honest, you're being nasty.

Consider these three responses to a band member asking if you heard their latest track.

The first answer is blunt and hurtful. The second answer is not only blunt, but doesn't help at all. The third answer however avoids being hurtful without lying, and offers advice on how to improve without being pushy.

Practising this is as simple as having everyday conversations. If you join our group, we can help guide you on this if you'd like to improve.

Integrity

Honesty is all well and good, but if you have a personal set of rules which you stick to, people will find you more reliable. You don't have to be a knight in shining armour, you just need to be consistent.

Make sure to give people warnings if they're about to make you change your demeanour. Don't just become hostile because a certain topic or action makes you hostile, give people a chance to back off. That's how you establish and enforce boundaries.

As an example, one of my personal rules is that a proper apology only comes when I know and understand what I did wrong, and includes either a reason why it should not happen again, or steps I have or are taking to avoid it in the future.

Reliability

Being reliable will gain you a final big boost in respect. It comes back to trust, consistency, and being able to know that you will do what you say.

In the technological world we live in, most people have a mobile phone. You can use alarms and calendars from almost anywhere, which is a great way to make sure you don't forget important things.

Results

When you are trustworthy, reliable and consistent, people will know what they can turn to you for. This doesn't mean that you will be everything to everyone.

Maybe you have a rule that you'll tell anyone if you find out that they're being tricked in some way, so people won't turn to you for help in cheating others.

Maybe you have a rule that you will hide things from people if asked, so people won't trust you to tell them if something bad is coming their way.

These are basically opposite stances, but whilst both can be good or bad, being consistent can increase people's opinions of you, and their respect.
